It’s FEATURE ARTIST FRIDAY!!!!

She doesn’t know she’s being featured (yet), but I really love this picture. And she took it. And, because I think it’s such a neat picture, I’m featuring it so other’s can see it also! It comes from my dearest dear friend Leslie E./W.! And here it is! Maybe once she sees it’s being featured, she will want to name it or say something about it. But until then, just enjoy it! šŸ˜€

  1. I tell you what!
This picture is actually really meaningful. It’s a picture of the map of San Antonio schools in the San Antonio Independend School District that was on my lap as I was taking a bus tour of San Antonio with all my Teach For America people.
On the tour, we drove through the best and the worst neighborhoods San Antonio could offer. We saw the school with the 90-something percent graduation rate, noted the neighborhoods that surrounded it, then crossed the tracks and saw school after school with graduation rates in the 20s or 30s. We took two gigantic charter buses through the projects listening to our tour guide’s shocking statistics about student achievement in these schools and heart-wrenching anecdotes about fathers with cut and calloused working hands whose only wish is that their sons’ hands don’t end up feeling like theirs.
The tour did its job: we all came off those buses with tear-streaked faces and an even stronger determination to reach and teach the kids who get totally shafted by America.

  2. Leslie- Thank you for the story behind it! It makes the picture even more special. ā¤
